Every month in the United States, three million children miss school due to fear of bullies. We teach your child to use verbal assertiveness to deter bullies and non-violent self-defense techniques to stay safe.
We don’t teach how to punch or kick, since this often does more harm than good. Instead, we use leverage-based control holds to neutralize threats using the massively effective art of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
As your child learns and practices the art, they will quickly notice their skills of emotional regulation and self-control strengthening. As these skills develop in class, they will also grow in other areas of their life. The more they practice, the more intuitive it becomes. A strong foundation in these life skills gives children an advantage when it comes to communicating (with peers, siblings, parents, and other adults), getting their homework done, being confident and respectful in class, showing responsibility at home, and developing into mature and kind adults.
The years between four and twelve years old are very important. This time is when many critical habits are formed. Martial arts is a FUN and fulfilling way to build those habits the right way! We are inspired and motivated by the transformations we see in the behavior of our younger students. Come see for yourself how martial arts classes can change your child’s life and make a more peaceful home!
Confidence Helps Against Bullying at School
As your child is focused during class, they begin to be focused at home and school. Repetition, fun, play, serious practice, and lots of positive of encouragement are all essential in developing confidence. A strong foundation of life skills infuses children with an incredible advantage when it comes to schoolwork, learning in a classroom, and becoming responsible people as they get older.
“We Learn To Be Confident in Our Gracie Bullyproof® Classes.”
Can your child learn how to stop bullying at school through Gracie Jiu-Jitsu?
We believe they can!
We build confidence in our young students through the way they talk to themselves and others. We also show them how to plan and achieve the goals they set for themselves. As your child ascends through the belt ranks, they’ll see how their hard work pays off, and become really proud and confident when they’re consistently hitting those goals.
That feeling of accomplishment and the way we practice respecting and listening to others will help them gather the internal strength to feel confident in standing up to any bully they encounter on the playground, in the classroom, or even in their own head.
We teach our students the power of positive self-talk. “Self-talk,” also known as mindset, refers to the way that kids address themselves in day-to-day life. This self-talk can either be encouraging and positive, or discouraging and negative, and we teach our students the former to keep their confidence blossoming.
Positive Self-Talk to Combat Bullying
We believe every student is precious, unique, and worth defending in every way. Martial arts isn’t always easy, especially for kids. They are just starting the process of learning hand-eye coordination, focus, balance, and motor skills, which martial arts classes expedite, equipping your child for success.
When presented with the challenge of learning a new move, they can start to think, “I’m dumb. I’ll never learn this. I’m failing. I don’t want to try again or else I’ll just embarrass myself.” But our world-class instructors are fast to correct this, coaching with positive encouragement and thinking!
We show students how to have a success-based mindset: “I’m trying. I’m proud of myself for trying. Yes, I can, and yes I will. I will not give up until I succeed.” As any bullying victim knows, confidence can be broken and the cycle of bullying can persist when a lack of confidence is sensed by the bully.
Encouraging a positive mindset in martial arts classes not only helps children become more confident to stand up to the bully, but it also diminishes the burden repetitive negative comments can create in children.
We Teach Nonviolent Ways to Stand Up to Bullies
One unique aspect of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the non-violent goal of the art. One question many parents have is, “Will martial arts make my child violent and aggressive? I don’t want Johnny unleashing his Kung-Fu, Ninja skills on his little sister Susie or on his classmates.” Never fear. They will not become a bully themselves!
Instead, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is the “gentle art”. We teach our students how to use other tools in their toolboxes to diffuse potentially violent situations using nonviolent methods of conflict resolution.
From day one, we teach verbal Jiu-Jitsu, showing students that their voice and their posture can be weapons all their own. When they have straight posture, they exude confidence, and a confident child is 90% of the way to bully-proofness! The bully will be taken off guard as they’re used to someone who backs down easily. We also teach our kids that martial artists use their voices first to stand up for themselves and others, talking down or de-escalating the situation.
Bullies choose targets who don’t stand up for themselves and who seem easily bothered. We show our kids they can be confident, proud, and natural-born leaders who aren’t afraid to do what is right and moral without stooping to the level of violence or bullying themselves.
